Sodium hypochlorite (solid), chemical formula NaClO, is a strong oxidizing white solid chemical, usually existing as a pentahydrate (NaOCl·5H₂O) or in industrial powder/tablet form.
Physical Properties
Appearance: Anhydrous form is a white powder; pentahydrate is a pale yellow-green crystal. Industrial products are mostly white/pale yellow powder, granules, or tablets.
Odor: Has a strong, pungent chlorine odor.
Solubility: Easily soluble in water; aqueous solution is strongly alkaline (pH 11-13).
Stability: Extremely unstable. Easily decomposes upon exposure to heat, light, or acid, releasing chlorine gas.
Melting Point: Anhydrous form approximately 18°C; pentahydrate 25-27°C.

Bleaching: Bleaching of pulp, textiles, and grease.
Water treatment: Decolorization, deodorization, algae removal, and cyanide reduction (treatment of electroplating wastewater).
Industrial oxidation: Organic synthesis and pharmaceutical/chemical raw materials.
